Dance performance opportunities - where to look for them...
Seeking performance opportunities while studying dance accelerates your growth as a dancer by providing practical experience, boosting confidence, offering feedback, and fostering creativity. It also helps you connect with the broader dance community and deepen your appreciation for the cultural and artistic aspects of your chosen dance form. Whether you’re pursuing it as a hobby or a profession, performing dance is an integral part of the learning process that enriches both your skills and your enjoyment of the art form.
Where to look for dance performance opportunities - locally? Here are a few ideas based on the experience of belly dance performing artists here in New York City.
Let us start with casual and semi-casual dance performance opportunities. Even as a beginner belly dancer, you may want to seek some easy, casual performance opportunities. Small, low-pressure performances, like dancing at a friends' gathering, a student recital, or a community event, can make a big difference in your journey as a dancer. Performing helps you overcome stage fright, develop stage presence and expression, and see what moves and steps work best for you. If you perform at your studio dance events, you will meet other dancers, teachers, and event organizers who can support your journey. Waiting until we're "good enough" slows our growth as dancers. It's better to gain experience than strive for perfection.
Dance for your friends! They might not expect a belly dance performance, making it a delightful and entertaining surprise that adds excitement to your gettogether. Dance has a way of breaking the ice and creating a warm, joyful atmosphere. Whether it’s a birthday, or a girls’ night out, belly dancing adds a touch of elegance and fun that makes the moment unforgettable. Dance at a beach outing!
Performing a light-hearted belly dance routine for your girlfriends is always a great idea! It's creativity, emotional expression, and social connection. The supportive environment, coupled with the joy of sharing something personal and meaningful, will make the experience both rewarding and memorable. Dance at a picnic!
Perform at studio dance recitals! Recital audiences, whether fellow dancers, family, or friends, are there to celebrate the art of dance and support you. Even a short, casual performance can help you gain confidence, refine your stage presence, and get comfortable sharing your art with an audience.
These two video programs (belly dance beginner and open level) have sections focused on showmanship, stage presence, musicality, and sensuality of movement:
Sensual Belly Dance by Blanca - "As a form of body language, dance speaks the truth of your thoughts and feelings. In belly dance, sensuality has always been one of the most highly prized qualities. Aware of your sensual joy, your audience instantly knows that you are "comfortable with your body" and enjoying yourself. This allows the gift of your dance to be experienced on a higher, richer level."
Bellydance: Opulent Motion: The Artistry of Slow Moves with Sarah Skinner explores techniques, styling and expression for dancing to slow bellydance rhythms and rhythmless taqsim. It is open level, but a special section reviewing the foundation movements of bellydance makes it accessible for beginners. Slow dance leaves a lot of room for emotional projection, expressivity and story-telling.
Dance at street fairs! Street fairs often celebrate diversity of ethnic cultures, and belly dance adds an exotic and artistic element that introduces people to a beautiful cultural tradition. Belly dance is enjoyed by people of all ages, from kids to adults, making it an inclusive attraction. Dance studios often organize performances at street fairs to promote their dance form and gain new students.
Here is Jenna Rose performing at street fairs in New York City.
How about a 2-minute (half a song) performance at a touristy site - a street corner near a landmark, a town square...? Bring a friend to take a vid for social media!
How about this: "Mom surprises dad - belly dances for his birthday"... Dance for your family! A birthday party should be filled with happiness and laughter. A belly dance performance adds a playful, lighthearted touch that keeps the party festive and fun.
These two instructional programs will help you build a mini belly dance show for a family celebration or a romantic event:
"Seven Veils - Romantic Bellydance" by Sarah Skinner is beginner belly dance instruction that will teach you how to perform a romantic dance for a special occasion. Whether it is a birthday party or a personal, romantic evening, this belly dancing program will teach you the skills and give you the entertainment ideas you need to make your special event unforgettable.
Belly Dance Show Basics by Tanna Valentine is a 2-and-a-half-hour instructional program that will introduce you to the full set of skills needed to perform a classic belly dance show. The program includes breakdown and practice of the basic belly dancing vocabulary of steps, but the main focus is on learning how to put the show together and make it great.
Why not bring joy to random people at a local park? Brighten their day! Be a cultural ambassador! (Make sure a friend films you performing and post on social media!) Many people might never step into a dance studio or an art venue, but a spontaneous performance in a park introduces them to belly dance in a casual, warm, light-hearted, and welcoming way. Parks are full of people of all ages, from children to seniors. Seeing a live dance performance can spark curiosity, inspire, and even encourage some to dance along. Plus, belly dance, with its flowing movements and colorful costumes, harmonizes beautifully with nature!
You can make a video of yourself performing dance on the beach or in the woods (alone, without an audience), and, if it comes out great, publish the video on social media for your online audience to enjoy! You can also turn a bunch of dance video clips into a "music video" like this:
Another DIY "music video" genre you can try is a mini video report about a day in your dance life that will include some snippets of you dancing. Examples:
You can also spontaneously dance at public celebrations, such as parades organized by local communities.
Many dancers participate in the Mermaid parade and the Halloween parade here in New York City.
The following performance opportunities can be either non-commercial or commercial.
Perform dance at world music and world cultures events - at a high school, college, library, local community center, etc. Belly dance pairs beautifully with various world music genres, including Middle Eastern, African, Latin music and fusion beats. World music/cultures events celebrate ethnic diversity, and belly dance, with its deep cultural roots, adds authenticity to these celebrations. Musicians and dancers thrive on synergy. Performing belly dance alongside live world music fosters collaboration.
A dance show is a fantastic addition to charity fundraisers. People are more likely to donate when they feel entertained and engaged. A belly dance performance can boost donations by inspiring generosity and adding value to the event. Some belly dancers invite audience members to join in or learn a few moves, creating a fun, interactive experience that makes people more likely to contribute to the cause. Belly dance is engaging for people of all ages, making it a great entertainment choice for diverse crowds. How about a performance at an animal shelter fundraiser?
Performing belly dance at street festivals and fairs is incredibly rewarding because it brings energy, culture, and connection to a lively and diverse audience. Unlike formal dance performances, festivals attract people from all walks of life. This allows you to introduce belly dance to a wider audience, including those who may not have seen it before. The open, festive setting makes it easy to engage with the crowd. Whether through eye contact, inviting people to clap along, or even getting some to dance, belly dance creates a fun and inclusive experience. With colorful costumes, graceful isolations, and hypnotic shimmies, belly dance naturally stands out, making it a perfect fit for the lively and artistic vibe of a street festival. Festivals often attract artists, musicians, and event organizers. Performing there can lead to new collaborations, future bookings, and connections with fellow performers.
Dance at music events! Many rock and pop bands incorporate global influences into their sound. Belly dance blends well with world music, electronic, or tribal beats, enhancing the music’s impact. A belly dance opener makes a music event stand out, offering audiences something fresh and exciting. Belly dance is appreciated across cultures, making it a great way to connect with a broad audience before the main act.
There are many commercial performance opportunities for both professional and amateur dancers.
Many nightclubs hire dancers. Here are Neon and Tanna Valentine performing in New York City's nightclubs.
Every performance opportunity is a great learning experience, even if the venue where you dance isn't the most glamorous place. Many cafés and bars serving the after-work crowd eagerly hire belly dancers to create nightclub-like atmosphere and add exotic, relaxing, and vibrant energy to the evening. For dancers, especially early in their performing journey, dancing in a smaller, less formal setting is a great way to build confidence, test their routines, and get comfortable dancing in front of different types of audiences.

These days there are even romance novels featuring belly dancers! "...The wind teased her long skirt and sent a ripple through her lush, shiny hair. A denim jacket, casually thrown over her shoulders, contrasted playfully with the exotic elegance of her belly dance costume. In one hand, she carried a chic fashion bag, swinging gently with her stride. A tall, sharply dressed man in a suit came to an abrupt halt as if the very air had shifted around him. His gaze locked onto her, captivated, unable to look away. She moved with effortless grace, her hips swaying, the sparkle of her costume hypnotizing. A slow, knowing smile curled on her lips as their eyes met. For a moment, the world around them, yellow cabs rushing by, the hum of the street, faded into the background..."
Private parties/events are perhaps the most lucrative performance opportunities for belly dancers - at least here in New York City. These are family events, such as weddings, bachelorette parties, bar/bat mitzvahs, birthdays, anniversaries, etc., and private corporate parties. However, because you are expected to dance at someone's home or office, you must be careful accepting private event bookings. Accept only those offered to you by individuals or agents you know and trust. Never respond to online ads. Make sure the event organizers understand the nature of your dance form and don't expect an exotic dance show from a belly dancer or a Brazilian samba dancer.
Belly dance for Valentine's Day parties! Belly dance brings sophistication, warmth, and charm to any event. It energizes the party crowd and creates a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Many belly dancers include light audience participation, such as teaching simple moves or inviting guests to join in, adding an engaging and memorable touch to the party.
Be a fairy-tale princess: Dance at kids' birthday parties!
Dance at destination weddings! A belly dance performance enhances the romantic, exotic, and celebratory atmosphere of the special day. If the wedding has a bohemian or tropical theme, belly dance aligns seamlessly with its aesthetic and ambiance.
